In memory of Mel Starrs, 1973-2012
We have just heard the incredibly sad and unexpected news of the death of Mel Starrs.
We only came to know Mel over the past year or so, but she made such an impression. She was always full of energy and joy - even as she disappeared into a pile of Government consultation documents, lamented skills shortages or inequalities in engineering and architecture, or ploughed her way through technical calculation after technical calculation.
If you've never heard of Mel, please visit her website: http://www.melstarrs.com/elemental/. There's a very moving tribute from her partner Mark, and the archive of Mel's sustainability rants, raves, opinions, joys and woes. She wrote about green buildings, climate change, engineering, building physics, policy development and social networking with equal passion, vigour and directness.
A sudden death always stops you in your tracks. You sit very still. Ignore your Inbox. Let the phone ring. You think about what might have been, the future that won't ever come, the days that are lost to time.
You have to try hard to remember the days that did happen, the history, the life. Mel seemed to be one of those people who was all about life, who embraced it, who filled its days and nights with adventures, curiosity and laughter. Maybe the solace now is to remember how Mel lived and try to live in the same spirit.
A Just Giving web page has been set up for donations to Mel's favoured charity, Cancer Research. You can make donations at: https://www.justgiving.com/Mel-Starrs
