The SE2 Scuttlebutts: we did it!
Now that we’ve all had a bit of time to relax and allow our hands to return to their normal un-calloused state we thought we’d better give you an update on how we got on with our rowing challenge!
It was a grey and windy day, and had already been raining for an hour or so when the SE2 Scuttlebutts boarded the ‘Master Shipbroker’ at the Westminster boating base. A few stretches and practice pulls later, it was time to line up for the starting horn. And then, with the cheers of the spectators ringing in our ears we were off! Only 8.5 miles to go…
We set a good pace coming through the city, and David (our cox) had a lot of fun pointing out all the historic bridges and monuments we were passing. There was no time to stop and enjoy the sites however, as we raced under Waterloo, London and Tower Bridge.
We were getting tired and the wind was picking up as we pulled towards Greenwich. But, with a final spurt of Scuttlebutts spirit, we put on a last burst of speed and crossed the finish line at the amazing time of 1 hour 13 minutes! We weren’t in first place, but we were chuffed to have finished, and to have raised so much for such a great cause.
After a well-earned shower, and with refreshments in hand, we sat down with the teams and all of our friends and family to hear a little bit more about all the amazing work that the AHOY centre are doing. More speeches followed, and then it was time for medals!
A huge thanks again for everyone who donated, came to cheer us on, bought cakes and put up with our moaning about blisters. Thanks especially to Liz and Rachael for being the most supportive bosses and cheering us on our way!
If you fancy giving one of the AHOY’s rowing challenges a go, you can find out more here! We can’t recommend a more worthwhile cause, or a better way to make friends, get fit, and enjoy our beautiful city.
If you haven’t donated yet, there’s still time! Log on to our justgiving page and help us reach the £2000 mark.
So, what next for the SE2 Scuttlebutts? All suggestions welcome…
