SE2 Environmental report 2012/2013
Protecting and improving the environment is central to SE2’s ethos, operations and business activities and we’re committed to improving our environmental performance.
To assess how we’re doing we produce an Environmental Report each year, designed to show our current performance and give an overview of our actions and future targets within each of the areas we feel have the greatest impact on the environment:
- Waste
- Energy & Water
- Transport & Travel
- Procurement
- Local Environment & Community
Every month we record our electricity and gas usage, our business and commuting travel and the waste that we produce. This data is processed to provide an annual CO2 emissions figure, which we offset with Pure Leapfrog.
We also review annually the recycled content of the things we buy and what we’ve done over the year to enhance our local environment or support our local community. The resulting Environmental Report is reviewed on an annual basis and published here on our website.
Our performance 2012/2013
Over the last reporting year we reduced our emissions overall by around 8% from the 2011/2012 baseline. This reduction is mostly the result of a huge decrease in our business travel emissions (down 23%). Our electricity and gas usage increased slightly (up 4% and 6% respectively) and our emissions from waste sent to landfill also increased by around 10%.
So, we’ve done well in some areas but have failed to meet our targets for reducing energy use and waste sent to landfill – which means there’s certainly room for improvement this year.
Our Environmental targets for 2013/14 are to:
- Not increase our waste to landfill
- Return to our 2011/2012 baseline electricity use (i.e. reduce by 6%)
- Influence the landlord to control the way the heating is used in the whole building
- Not fly
- Reduce paper purchases by 13.33%
- Increase the orders of stationery items with recycled content from 38% to 60%
- Review the use of remanufactured/recycled ink cartridges
- Deliver the CHPA Conference and Awards dinner to Level 1 BS8901 Sustainable Event Management
- Take on one local work experience person
